Bavarian Textile Industry Museum Augsburg

Long before the industrial revolution, Augsburg was a center of the European textile industry. As early as 1759, a cotton manufacture opened in the city and by 1870 Augsburg counted 19 spinning mills, weavings and bleach plants. An entire ''Textile District'' developed around these manufacturing sites accommodating more than 30.000 workmen at the beginning of the 20th century. Business flourished until World War II, which marked the decline of the whole industry.

The Bayerisches Textil- und Industriemuseum (TIM; Bavarian Textile Industry Museum) revives the successful past of Augsburg's textile manufacturing. Located in a former worsted spinning mill of the textile district, the museum presents the biographies of workmen and textile entrepreneurs over the centuries. Exhibits include historical weaving looms and contemporary high-tech machines. Another section shows patterns of cloth from the 1780s to the 1990s complemented by a fashion area giving an overview of 200 years of fashion and costume design.
