Playing to Win

The 53rd ARD International Music Competition will take place in Munich from August 30 to September 17. Competitions in the categories of flute, viola, harp and string quartet will be held at the Bayerischer Rundfunk’s Broadcasting House and the Münchner Musikhochschule, and the semi-finals and finals will take place at the Prinzregententheater. Some 173 young instrumentalists and ensembles from 43 different countries, including the US and the UK, have qualified for the competition, which has provided a career springboard for many of today’s top musicians. The commissioned pieces that will be challenging the candidates this year include "Parthenope" for viola solo by David Sawer (semi-finals), "Finale" for flute solo by Georg Friedrich Haas (semi-finals), "Partita II" for harp solo by Heinz Holliger (semi-finals) and a study by Wolfgang Rihm (2nd round string quartet).
