It’s that time of year again: the asparagus season. In Germany, spring is synonymous with asparagus. Just as Lebkuchen is an essential element of Christmas and Starkbier is important in Lent, the influx of white asparagus to the local markets in May will mark the beginning of spring for many. This seasonal delicacy with its mild and slightly nutty flavor, can be bought throughout May at the Viktualienmarkt and at stalls around the city. Most of the asparagus sold at the market comes from nearby Schrobenhausen, where, if you are a true Spargel fan, you may like to visit the European Asparagus Museum. So, if you are looking for something interesting to do next Sunday afternoon, pack the kids into the car and head for Schrobenhausen to tour this unique museum and partake of a lunch of asparagus, fresh from the local fields—if you’re lucky you may even get to see the local Asparagus Queen.
