Conference Call

How is the economy part of a national and international culture? To what extent is it a sub- or superstructure of the socio-cultural system? How have the ethics of corporate economics changed in light of recent developments in America? These questions, and many more, will be explored in “Cultures of Economy—Economy of Cultures,” a conference organized by the Bavarian American Academy, and to be held at the Amerika Haus from June 20 to 22. BAA is a state-sponsored institution that promotes research on North America and encourages frequent scholarly exchanges between American and Bavarian universities. Past conferences have attracted such well-known speakers as I. Michael Heyman, former Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and former Chancellor of UC Berkeley; Werner Sollors, Harvard ethnic culture specialist; and A. E. Dick Howard, professor of law and public affairs at UVA and international constitutional adviser. The focus of this year’s conference will be the role of the economy in shaping society and culture in the United States and how this involves European developments. Topics addressed will include transnationalism, globalization, various discourses on culture and society and the survival and function of the arts in an increasingly corporate-minded world. The conference will feature leading experts in the fields of economics, history and cultural studies. For further information log on to www.amerika-akademie.de.
