Vivo, Ksar Club, and Atomic Café

Find out about three great Munich hot spots!

Bar & Café VIVO! Lothringerstraße 11 Tel. 44 85 03 5 How to get there: S-Bahn Rosenheimer Platz Many of you may remember the Haidhausen institution Café Größenwahn, now just a memory. Restaurateur Stephan Luwig’s VIVO! has taken its place; the only reminders of its previous incarnation are the black-and-yellow mosaic on the pay-phone wall, the logo above the door and quite a few Größenwahn regulars. Ludwig is determined to give VIVO! its own identity and has succeeded in creating a very relaxed bar/café atmosphere by ditching the bright, gaudy fittings of its predecessor. Unfortunately, VIVO! has a very pricey drinks menu, but every week a beer and a wine are selected and served at value prices. VIVO! is currently open from 16-1 weekdays and, as of May, will be offering a breakfast menu from 11 on weekends. During the Fasching weekend VIVO! went all out and stayed open for 100 hours straight. Many lived to tell about it and special mention goes to a certain Richard Atkinson (renown Haidhausen artist) who took home the gold by sticking out an 18-hour stretch. An upcoming event which is bound to be a blast is the legendary Lothringer Straßenfest which is usually held in the first week of July, by which time the VIVO! team will be in prime form. KSAR Club Müllerstr. 32 Tel. 26 40 38 How to get there: Tram 17, 18, 27 Located in Munich’s Glockenbach quarter, KSAR is one of the most interesting clubs in the area. It’s a known hangout for cool cats in the photography, music and film industries as well as lovers of bar jazz and house music as spun by various resident DJ’s such as Roland Appel, Fauna Flash and Thomas Baer. Sit back and relax in the lounge-like atmosphere and let one of the experienced barkeepers mix your favorite poison. KSAR doesn’t subscribe to the happy-hour fad currently sweeping Munich so expect to pay a pretty pfennig for your premium cocktail. Not entirely immune to trends, KSAR offers a huge selection of cigars - Cohiba Siglo, Montecristo, Romeo & Julieta and Partagas among them – fresh from the in-house humidor, as all good cigars should be. Weeknights are pretty mellow but weekends are bustling. If you are not a Stammgast and plan to go on Friday or Saturday night, you may need to wrangle with the doorman to get in for a coveted seat. Once you’re in though, the inviting atmosphere, enveloping chairs and great sounds make for a marvelous evening of lounging. ATOMIC CAFÉ Neuturmstr. 5 Tel. 22 83 05 4 How to get there: Bus 19 I’m hip, Daddyo! That’s what Chris Heine and Roland Schunk, the proprietors of Atomic Café, want you to shout when you pass through the silver doors into their sixties time warp. The scene is “bad” and the sounds “groovy.” All you hep-cats who still rate Quadrophenia No.1 on your movie list need look no further. Atomic Café was rated Munich’s best bar last year and based on its unremitting popularity, its hip owners plan on keeping the title. A full party calendar and mix of international live gigs keep this joint jumpin’. The scene has something for everyone: pop, beat, indie, soul, jazz, easy and electro. Not only is the music dedicated to the sixties, so is the decor: the period furniture and design make you fell like shouting “groovy, baby!” Who would expect anything less from two graphics gurus. The super-8 film nights are also a great change of pace – all this and more at moderate prices – you might not even think you’re in Munich, or at least 1999, anymore. Dress-code – mod if you have the wardrobe, no catastrophe if you don’t. >>>Atomic Events: Tuesday: Space Escapade (Exotic Club Pop Entertainment) with Martin Hemmel, Hangman and guests Wednesday: Alternative Spirits (808, Queer, Trash, Pops) with Gorri and Michael Thursday: Deeper Shade/>>in<< motion (The men from S.O.U.L.) Friday: The Smart Club (Club-Pop, British Guitar, US College Rock and Disco 2000) with Marc Liebscher Saturday: Beatschuppen/Black Beatschuppen with Weyssi, Martin, Hangman, “Superflo,” Keller and guests Sunday: La Boutique (Drumm & Bass)
