Where Munich’s second favorite beer festival will take place this year

When Munich’s Salvatorkeller, located atop Nockherberg and traditional home of the Starkbier season festival, burned down last November, it wasn’t just insurance companies and restaurant owners who were crying. It seemed the question being asked the next day at water coolers around the city was where or even if Munich’s second favorite beer festival would take place this year. Since the tragic fire, the Paulaner brewery, which produces the potent 7.5-percent alcohol beer, has been searching for a place to celebrate the event, scheduled to be held from March 17 to April 2. Because organizers wish to keep the festivities in the Au quarter, plans have been made to erect tents at Mariahilfplatz. The facility will hold 3,000 revelers, and still have room for a Blasmusik orchestra. Special permission, granted by Father Josef Zirl head priest at the Mariahilfkirche, was required in planning the two-week-long party. Father Zirl was somewhat reluctant to approve the event — which is characterized mainly by drunkenness — to take place in front of his church, but with Mayor Christian Ude on its side, Paulaner’s prayers were answered. <<< lm
