Passionstheater Oberammergau

Ever since 1633, the village residents of Oberammergau have staged a passion play each decade to commemorate the ending of a disastrous plague. Centuries later, the spectacle’s 1,400 amateur actors—all locals—attract an audience from all over the world. Even though spectators will have to wait until 2010 for the next rendition, Oberammergau’s enthusiastic actors will ease the wait with another biblical play on the prophet Jeremiah by Stefan Zweig. The play will be directed by Christian Stückl, an Oberammergau native, whose decisive artistic reformation of the passion play in 2000 established him on Germany’s theater scene. Today, he is the successful director of the Münchner Volkstheater. Jeremiah will play at the Oberammergau Passionstheater on six nights in August. Tickets cost € 19–49 and can be purchased by calling (08822) 92 31 58. For a schedule of performances, visit www.passionstheater.de. <<<
