Münchner Lichtblicke

Munich’s Ausländerbeirat recently announced the winners of this year’s Lichtblicke Awards, which recognize people and projects who work to create a harmonious culture for Germans and foreigners living in Munich. The first honoree, Fadumo Korn, moved to Munich from Somalia thirty years ago. Her bestselling auto-biography, Born in the Big Rains, was a searing condemnation of female genital mutilation. In addition, she works to end the practice as a member of “Forward Germany.” Munich’s “ComIn” project was also honored. In cooperation with “Handicap International,” this program works to help people who suffer double discrimination: disabled refugees. Free courses in German, English, and PC-skills help people with disabilities start a life in Munich. The third recipient of the award was “Friends of Abraham,” an international center for intercultural dialogue. Their guided mosque visits and themed city tours aim to create positive interchange between Christians and Muslims in Munich.
