American Beat in Augsburg

“Shuttle readings” are exactly what the name suggests: simultaneous readings held throughout a city or town, to which audiences may either walk or be driven. Though previous shuttle readings have focused on European literature, perhaps no authors are a better fit for this concept than the freewheeling Americans of the Beat Generation. On October 14, in locations throughout Augsburg, performers will read 10–20 minute-long excerpts from works by William S. Burroughs, Allan Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and others in a shuttle reading event entitled “American Beat: On the Border of Good Taste.” Each offering will be repeated each half hour, from 7 pm until midnight. Audiences may walk or take the special shuttle between participating locales. Because parking at most locations is very limited, driving is discouraged. A full list of participating locations is available at www.shuttle-lesung.de.
