Munich Opera Festival

It’s the high note of the opera lover’s year—the Munich Opera Festival (Festspiele). Starting on June 25, the city will host 35 days of world-class opera, with more than 50 different performances. Whether you’re into the heavyweight classics, such as Wagner’s Die Meistersinger, the melodic delights of Verdi’s La forza del destino or something more contemporary—perhaps a new arrangement of Benjamin Britten’s Billy Budd, you’re sure to find something that appeals. The festival also features the annual Oper für alle (Opera for everyone) weekend on July 9, when a live performance of Rigoletto in the Nationaltheater will be broadcast on a giant screen on Max-Joseph-Platz. The following evening, Zubin Mehta will conduct a free concert on Marstallplatz of Strauss favorites. Tickets for the festival start at just € 8. For more information, see www.staatsoper.de.
